Different Kinds of Characters 

First, I will talk about great characters that solve their problems with great attitudes in the book, Wayside School is Falling Down. The first character is Mrs. Jewls. There was a problem. The 30^th classroom children couldn’t learn about gravity by just testing trash, so Mrs. Jewls had an idea and bought a computer and threw it out the window and to the ground. That way, the children could know gravity faster. Second, I will talk about the character, Allison. Allison was locked in the 19^th classroom. But she solved the problem by making herself silly like when she was at Mrs. Jewls class, but then, Mrs. Zarves, the 19^th floor teacher, counted the number 10 to 1 coldly. If Allison put her socks on her foot, Mrs. Zarves would become just fine and make Allison do hard work again. But Allison didn’t, and she finally got out of the classroom. The third character is from chapter thirty. The 30^th floor children had a fire drill, and it was not a real fire, but the students were screaming. They solved the problem by hearing the people outside saying, “Stop ringing your bell.” When Mrs. Jewls stopped her bell, the school began to calm down.

Attitude 

These characters had attitude. The first is thinking what a heavy thing was that could teach the kids to learn about gravity. The second was how Allison could go back to Mrs. Jewls class. The last was Myron, who was the calmest kid with the 30^th floor children. It was because Myron heard what the people were saying and Myron said one word that made the kids quiet.  

In the story, Wayside School is Falling Down, I think my favorite character is DJ. He was in chapter eleven, and DJ was always smiling. But this time, DJ looked sad. This was because he lost his clock, so he talked with Kathy. DJ thought a bird thought the clock was food and chocked on it, so he was worried. But Kathy said something and DJ said, “I guess you’re right,” so he solved his problem with Kathy’s help.

If the characters were angry, they could not solve the problem. In chapter 20, 21, and 22, Mr. Kidswatter was mad at the three Eric’s. It was because someone said that he was a mugworm griblick. But he called all three students and just gave a few questions. Mr. Kidwatters did not know who was lying. He was really mad and didn’t solve his problem.

Then, when the characters have a fire drill at school, they scream, sing, or run. Some students calm down and help the teacher. First, Kathy says, “Hooray! Wayside School is falling!” Mrs. Jewls rings the cowbell. Maurecia opens the door because she is the door monitor. Jason yells and screams for help! Benjamin yells it is an earthquake. Stephen yells it is a fire. Last, Jenny screams it is a tornado. Some characters scream and yell, but other people calm down and help the teacher.  

Being Angry 

I think when characters are angry, then they can’t solve the problem because then, all the people scream and run. Then, other people can get hurt or many people can make it noise, so the teacher can’t tell them to calm down. It is too noisy, so they can’t hear the teacher. So I think characters can’t solve problems when they are angry.

Next, there is Katrina who is a girl who doesn’t go to school. Her mom says to play music many times, so Katrina has a flute and plays this instrument.

Katrina’s first mother is very kind. When Katrina plays, she says okay. And her first mother says to play music many times. Her second mother is the person whom her father marries one more time. And her father loves Katrina, so the new mom doesn’t like Katrina. The first problem in the story is that Katrina’s mom dies. And her new mother tells Katrina to go out to Old Agatha’s place. Old Agatha is a bad grandma. And she doesn’t like music. But when Katrina plays her flute, the house loves the music! The house becomes a bird and dances, and this saves Katrina from Old Agatha. Old Agatha goes away.

I think Katrina is kind, so other people help Katrina. I think if Katrina is bitter, she can’t fix her problems because she won’t play her flute.

Getting Help vs. Working Solo

When I have problems, like getting lost or something, I will ask a person to tell the way to some house. I think I need to ask a person who I know or a kind person. It’s not my real experience, but it’s an example of my problems. Some problems are like getting lost, car accidents, a person in the street lying, or not being able to work because there is no other person. I think we can get help like at work. Working together is the best because when I work alone, I can’t think. But working together can help us think together, and we can put our ideas together. We can reach our goals if we work together.

In the book, Chocolate Fever, Henry had a big problem. The problem was that he always ate chocolate. For example, he had chocolate milk, chocolate ice cream, chocolate cereal, chocolate syrup, chocolate, chocolate, chocolate! He ate it always. But chocolate fever made Henry stop eating chocolate. First, the school teacher and nurses started to help Henry, but they had no idea what to do, so later, Henry met a doctor named Doctor Fargo. So Doctor Fargo was surprised and interested in Henry’s disease, but Henry was scared so he ran away. Once, he saw a stranger named Mac. Mac was kind because he gave Henry food and gave a ride to Henry. Henry met a candy factory owner named Doctor Sugar Cane. He helped Henry get rid of the chocolate fever by feeding him vanilla pills. He knew that these pills can help because of two reasons. The opposite of chocolate is vanilla, and he had also had chocolate fever before. So Doctor Cane made Henry normal again, and his parents were proud of Henry after he came home. At the end of the story, Henry sprinkled cinnamon on his plate and tasted it, but it tasted so good, so he wanted to be in love with cinnamon now! In the end, there were three people who helped Henry. The first person was Doctor Fargo, the second person was Mac, and the third person was Doctor Sugar Cane.

            In Double Fudge, the first problem was Uncle Feather got out of his cage and got hurt. Some child didn’t know anything so he opened the cage. So Uncle Feather got out and he bumped into a window. His wing was broken because by surprise, Uncle Feather was flying around the room. All the characters felt surprised because Uncle Feather was out of his house. For the solution, all the characters worked together.  First, Peter told orders. He told other characters to do this or that. Next, Eudora pulled the shades so Uncle Feather couldn’t go out. And Cousin Howie closed the mirror. Next, Fudge got a blanket and shut all the doors, except for his door. I think everyone felt sorry that they all lived together and a little scared for living together. But in the end, everyone will be kind to each other because they worked together for the solution.

           When I am sick, I can ask for help from parents. Also, I can go to the hospital. Then, I can be healthy. I will go to my parents, and I will ask my mom to go to the hospital. Then, I will take medicine every day. I will eat well every day. For example, I am always taking medicine two times a day, so I can be healthy. I will compare two things. First, we can play. When we play alone, it is boring, and when we play together with others, it is very fun. Second, it is about doing work together. We can finish fast.

A Lesson Learned

Finally, I will talk about problems to be solved with someone vs. alone. First, I will talk about some problems I can have. The first example is when we have a ball and accidentally drop it, it can go under the car or on the car. I had this problem many times, but they all were different. When the ball was not too far, I could solve my problems, but sometimes I need to have help from others, especially adults. Once, I had a ball, but I didn’t expect that it could go under another car. So I was bouncing the ball, but it got under the car. Then, my dad went under the car (it was gross) and he got the ball. It was because my dad is very strong.

If it’s a big problem, I will get help from someone, and when it’s a small problem, I will do it myself. But when it’s hard, I will first do what I can do. Then, when it doesn’t work, I will get help from someone.

Then, I will talk about what kind of problem can be solved by teamwork. For example, in Double Fudge, Mini didn’t think that when he opened the cage, Uncle Feather could go out the cage, so he opened it. All the family worked together. Peter gave orders, Rudge shut all the doors except his bedroom door (this is because the cage was in Fudge’s room), Eudora pulled the shades (this is because the bird can think the window goes outside), and Cousin Howie covers all the mirrors.

I usually solve problems with someone. I’m saying this because I will talk about solving problems in stories. The problem I said where the ball will go under the car can be solved with someone, and solving problems without someone is like when I had a problem with my homework, I make short words longer and have many details like now, how I am doing homework!
